Dear Editor

analysis: Cromwell and Musharraf —Shahid Hamid

Comparing Cromwell and Musharraf is a big joke. Musharraf is typical Pakistani Military Dictator whose presense has disgraced Pakistan through much of it's history; and there is every chance that it can happen again. In other words Musharraf is not an exception in Pakistan. Musharraf is also a typical third world military dictator who number in hundreds in the 60 years.

The military records of Musharraf has nothing much to show itself. The only victory of Musharraf is against - democratic Pakistan - by the overthrowing an elected government. In contrast, Cromwell was a great commander on the battlefield . He was great strategist, tactician and made the New Model Army in which the old style hierarchy was greatly reduced, command structure was different. This New Model Army was was also revolutionary in which there were 'politcial commissars' who made sure Royalist and Catholic symapthies were eradicated. The labours of Cromwell made sure that Kings and Queens of England after him never aspired for Absolute Monarchy. Influence of Cromwell is great on the 21st century Britain

The Musharraf military record is bleak. Musharraf was always underhand and devious. Kargil was organized by him; in a characteristic move, the cannon fodder was not Pakistani regular troops , but Jihadi groups and (Pakistani Occu[ied) Kashmiri troops; the fall guy for this disaster was the Civilian government of Pakistan. This was also the pretext for overthrowing the civilian government. Musharraf's foray in Afghanistan is equally disastrous. His involvement in Afghanistan was underhand , devious, counterproductive and disastrous from the beginning to the end. After supporting different Pushtoon Jihadi groups like Hekmatyar, he settled on Taliban as the best bet for proxy rule on Afghanistan. When that also went out of control when Al-Queda became dominant in Afghanistan, he turned against Taliban by siding with America. In short, Musharraf is a disaster for Pakistan, Afghanistan, Kashmiris, Jihadis, Taliban, Islam and everybody. He is also a cause of futile bloodletting in the Indian subcontinent. In a way, he is also responsible for bring in NATO and American presence in the South Asia region and history will not forgive him for that.

In whatever way, the present day Pakistan deals with him, comparing him with Cromwell is a joke
